MCA to charge $20 entry fee from 31 January, which will rise to $35 if visitors want to see its major summer or winter exhibitionsSydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art will begin charging an entry fee in 2025 for the first time in more than two decades. Free general admission was introduced in 2000 under the directorship of Elizabeth Ann MacGregor with the aid of a Telstra sponsorship. But stagnant government funding has forced the museum’s hand, with the introduction of a $20 entry fee from 31 January. That fee will rise to $35 if visitors want to also see its major summer or winter exhibitions.Efficiency dividends by previous state and federal governments have placed some public art museums in a precarious financial position. In 2023 the Art Gallery of NSW flagged the possibility of charging general admission after a $3m cut in its recurrent funding left it with a $16m deficit.

The Musée d’Art et de Culture Soufis MTO, located on the outskirts of Paris, is the first museum exploring the art, heritage and spiritual traditions of Sufism, housed in a meticulously restored 19th-century mansion.
Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian’s (Iran, 1922-2019) drawings and cut glass mosaic works, featured in the exhibition, were influenced by the architecture of the Shah Cheragh Mosque in Shiraz, Iran, and by the work of Annemarie Schimmel, a prominent Sufi scholar. Her work combines Persian artisanal techniques with Sufi mysticism, particularly through the representation and symbolism of geometric figures very present in Sufi art and culture. She creates dreamlike installations that echo the environments where she exhibits – in the context of the MACS MTO, the water of the river and the surrounding nature – revealing the potential for metamorphosis at work in each manifestation of life. The creations of Troy Makaza (Zimbabwe, 1994) unfold around several narratives determined by the artist's own experience. Particularly influenced by the history and culture of Zimbabwe, he draws his references from both socio-political and personal contexts.MACS MTO’s mission is not only to preserve and showcase the artistic heritage of Sufism, but also to create a place where visitors can engage with these works on a deeply personal and reflective level. The museum’s inaugural exhibition, “Un Ciel Intérieur” (An Inner Sky), on view through March 20, 2025, features the creations of seven international contemporary artists, which resonate deeply with Sufi values and broader themes of spiritual thought and inner exploration.Audiences are invited to consider the universal values of Sufism, such as love and respect, through the permanent collection and the lens of contemporary art. The museum’s opening exhibition, “Un Ciel Intérieur” (An Inner Sky), explores subjects, such as the relationship with science, cosmology, nature and spirituality, through the work of seven international contemporary artists.

Views of the Thames at the Courtauld Gallery (Photo by Benjamin Cremel/AFP via Getty Images) ... You could say that 2024 has been a perfect year for exhibitions. The National Gallery’s bicentenary year was a chance to reflect on its role not just as a place for the public to enjoy the peerless national collection, but as an incomparable resource for artists. Who better to make the point than David Hockney, whose status as a national treasure is easily equal to that of the gallery itself. Comprising just three paintings, this exhibition was a passionate and elegantly argued case for looking at pictures carefully, in which Hockney’s personal, lifelong relationship with Piero della Francesca’s Baptism of Christ revealed much about the special qualities of that painting and explored how pictures and the National Gallery can nurture a rich interior life.To April 2025 (designmuseum.org/exhibitions/the-world-of-tim-burton) ...
